| The mandolin evolved from earlier types of fretted instrument in Italy during the 19th century and reached a peak of popularity around 1895. American makers developed the flat backed style of mandolin, Martin and Gibsons are the best known of these. The flat back gives a more open sound which projects well, and is also easier to hold. Most modern styles use flat back instruments. | ON THIS PAGE: STUDENT MANDOLINS ASHBURY MANDOLINS KENTUCKY MANDOLINS HANDMADE MANDOLINS ASHBURY ELECTRICS MANDOLIN BOOKS MANDOLIN SPARES Mandolin FAQ Page updated on: 27/08/08 |
